Forced hot air furnaces are the most popular type of heating appliance in homes and commercial spaces in the United States.  They’re efficient, cost-effective, quiet and relatively easy to install.  If you’re considering adding a new gas furnace to your home, here are a few things you’ll like to know.

Operation of forced hot air furnaces

Heating your home begins with the furnace pulling cool air from the house through ductwork and delivering it to the furnace.  The air is heated inside the furnace and then blown through other ductwork to enter your rooms through your home’s heat registers.
A forced hot air furnace uses a few main components to bring heat to your home.

Thermostat

The job of the thermostat is to regulate the inside temperature of your home, according to directive you set.  When the temperature is below the directive, the thermostat causes the furnace burners to turn on.  When the temperature is at or above the pre-set level, the thermostat turns the furnace off.

Gas burner

This is the part of the furnace that creates heat in the heat exchanger.

Heat exchanger

The heat exchanger heats air and also collects the gasses produced when the furnace is in heating mode and exhausts them through a vent to outside the home.

Blower

The blower brings cool interior air from the home to the furnace via the cold air return.  The cool air moves around the heat exchanger until it is warmed, after which it is sent to the home as heat.

Air ducts

Your home has two types of ducts: supply ducts and return ducts.  The return ducts handle the cool air, and the supply ducts channel the heated air into the home.

Why people love forced hot air furnaces

  • System-compatible: Gas furnaces and air conditioning systems can share the home’s ductwork, making for a very convenient operation and simplified installation.
  • Attractive cost: Forced hot air furnaces don’t have a large number of component and parts, making them more affordable than their radiant-heat counterparts.
  • Energy efficiency: New gas-driven furnaces boast high heat-efficiency ratings and are excellent at delivering plenty of usable heat.  The amount of gas that becomes heat vs. the amount used to create the heat and is thus wasted in production is measured with the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating (AFUE).  For example, models in the Carrier brand forced hot air furnace line have ratings of 80% to 98.5%.
